Has anyone of you heard about Serangan Island?
Serangan island is a small island located in Denpasar area, Bali. The fishing community on the island have several routine activities in order to take care of the surrounding's ecosystem. And one of the activities is to build a coral reef nursery.
Years before there was no activity as such. The initiator and pioneer of the redeemed mindset amongst the fishermen in Serangan Island is a humble local fisherman named I Wayan Patut.
Since around 2000 Patut kept encouraging the other fishermen to nurse and restore the environment that was starting to be damaged at that time.
Although the initiator was a vocational high school graduate, he was longing to see the fishermen to get more advanced and knowledgable.
Not only the coral reefs, but Wayan Patut and his community are now also focusing on the local sea horse preservation. They have bred 2 species of sea horse since 2006 and released more than 15,000 adult sea horses into the Serangan waters starting from 2010.
The innovation has never stopped. By working closely with several parties Wayan Patut has managed to developed an ecotourism area where tourists can have a closer look at the ocean ecosystem through the coral reef nursery programme.
We are glad to know that Wayan Patut has obtained a recognition which led Serangan area to gain Adipura reward in 2011. The 45 years old man, however, will not stop dedicating himself to restore the environment into a better place for future generations.
