The best place to buy souvenirs: Sukawati Art Market

Article image

My favorite place to buy souvenirs and art pieces in Bali is Sukawati Art Market. It is located in Jalan Raya Sukawati, Bali, and opens from 9 am to 6 pm daily. Sukawati and the neighboring area named Batuan are the home of the craftsmanship in carving and great painters. If you want to buy Balinese silver jewelry, you also can find it at Sukawati traditional market. However, the best place for silver jewelry is actually in Celuk village which located close to the art market.

Sukawati Art Market is the place where you can find souvenirs cheaper than anywhere else on the island. The prices are negotiable, so you can exercise your bargaining skills while shopping. If you want to explore the market, make sure to set at least half a day to do it because there are just so many to see and choose from.

Once you enter, you will find an extensive range of items with amazing prices starting from $2. You can choose from handmade bags, paintings, wooden ethnic bowls, mirrors, wooden sculptures, laptop bags, crockery, comfortable batik pants and dresses, hats, and so many other gorgeous items.

Shopping tips

  1. Get around the market and do a survey before you decide to buy, many merchants sell the same items but they might give you different prices depending on their mood, so don’t be shy to bargain.
  2. Be polite when asking a price though and don’t be rude when asking for discounts. They don’t make that much profit.
  3. The best time for shopping is in the morning. Come early when the art market just open. The art market open from 09:00 – 18:00 (Bali time). Therefore, you need to come by 09:00. The Balinese merchants believe that if they are successful in making sales the morning, then their whole day selling would become successful as well. They call it, “Penglaris”(the sales maker).
  4. If you decide to buy paintings at Sukawati market, try not to get the frame because it take space in your luggage. However, if you have plenty of space and weight to spare, get the frame! The painting frame is so much cheaper compared to if you buy it in your origin country
