The impact of the previous reclamation project on Ngurah Rai’s airport runway years ago can now be ’seen’ from the effects of the shore in Kuta Beach, Bali with the flooding over the past week. It was stated by I Wayan Swarsa as Kuta’s Traditional Village Leader.
He believes the outstanding Kuta Beach’s fame for its consistent yet clean waves which is also an amateur surfer friendly area deserves to be preserved. However for the last a few days, the island’s iconic beach has been submerged and battered by high tides and strong waves. It has even started to overflow on to the main road adjacent to the beach causing floods.
“Seeing the airport runway’s construction is already clearly showing a direct impact on the tidal and water movement around the Kuta area of the island. We are terrified that the huge reclamation project at Benoa Bay would worsen the tidal flow. Therefore we expect these flooding incidents to be taken seriously by the government and take action to prevent this from happening again,” I Wayan Swarsa explained to Tribun Bali on Tuesday (7/6/2016).
As far as it has been broadcasted by the news over the last few days, the flooding from the high tides in Kuta Beach seemed severe and it continued for almost a week. Up until now the beach is less occupied than usual as the tourists and selling vendors are staying away.
